If you look closely at the down tube, between the lever bosses and head tube, you will notice a thin line. This isn't typically a structural problem, but a crack that forms in the paint, due to differences in the flexibility of the tube. It does, however, reveal where the joint is. Trek laid up pieces like the head, BB and seat cluster assemblies in carbon fiber and then bonded round, CF tubes to them. It makes it appear to be like a modern frame, where the tubes and joints are laid up as a single unit, which is typically stronger and lighter, but it's actually a transition between earlier bonded and monocoque designs. While it works pretty well, and streamlined manufacturing, it's a bit disingenuous and, sadly, typical for Trek in that era.
