I was trying to put "crud" fenders on it but wasn't able to fit them due to the short seat stays.

try a post type rear MTB rack. QR on and off(less than a minute.) ugly yes but keeps the crud off your back. Up front? Clearance probs on my Project too.

Yeah, it just didn't work for me aesthetically. Don't own the bike anymore either.
