Giant Boulder ATX

I got a new bike from a swap with a friend. I missed my old Trek 8700, so I decided to build another retro mtb again. Hoping I don't go crazy with the parts changes on this one.

Frame:
1989 Giant Boulder ATX quad butted tubes

Fork/Headset:
Giant quad butted fork / Neco

Crankset/Bottom Bracket:
IXF

Pedals:
Wellgo

Drivetrain/Cog/Chainring/Chain:
11-36 HG-201 / 36t nw chainring / KMC X9

Derailleurs/Shifters:
XTR M951 / Deore LX 9s

Handlebars/Stem:
Riv Tosco bootleg / Avenir

Saddle/Seatpost:
Ariake Eiger / Kalloy Uno

Brakes:
Shimano STX / Moto levers

Front Wheel/Hub/Tire:
Zac Rigida / XTR M900 / WTB Nano

Rear Wheel/Hub/Tire:
Zac Rigida / XTR M900 / WTB Nano

Accessories:
Countless zefal bottles, tiny rack for carrying tiny things (including my tiny giyo pump), and fenderless this time. Added a granny ring as a bail out option when the hills get too steep but so far haven't needed it yet.

More Info:
ok so the bike is actually a 17, but it feels small on me (?) Apparently Giant retro mtbs have a shorter toptube than most of the other brands which is why it feels small. Might get an 18 if I find one for sale.

Bike History

Click a link below to see past stages of this bike.

  1. Initial
  2. V 1 (tringle speed)
  3. V 2 (ss)
  4. V 3
  5. V 4

Current Stage Info:

Rapid rise is actually nice (and no, I'm not hopping on a trend). Relegated to rat bike status, this is its actual final form.

Hey! I'm so in love with your bike, it looks great! What height are you? I wanna build a regular boulder which is also a 17inch and I was wondering if it will fit me

Thanks! I am 5'7" on a good day. I do kind of have shorter reach than most, as I think my arms are shorter than normal. I don't have any problems riding this though, its really comfy despite the toptube being short for its size.

Love the build. I didn't realize some of these old Giants were quad butted! Also, I can appreciate your gearing choice: it's almost identical to the 1x9 setup I just put on my 98 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo (11-36t x 36t).

Thanks, digging your Hoo Koo E Koo build as well. I also only found out about the tubing while I was conducting some research online, which actually made me appreciate the bike more.

Indeed, it is! I thought it wouldn't work with the hills around my area, but to my surprise, the ratios were just enough for me to get around.
