You know what? I honestly completely agree with you. Funny to advance in the cycling industry and have my style and taste advance as well. The only bikes that I have owned and actually still like now that I look back on them were my KHS v2, Pista Concept, and Tarmac. And those were the most recent, lol. I'm actually planning on getting this frame again from eBay and building it up better this time around.

Lol, exactly one of things that I would do differently when I get it the second time around. My seat was WAYYY to high when I owned this bike. Seriously, way too high. And the bars were stupid, I would never run track drops on this bike again. I would run road drops and always ride the hoods and with a corrected seat height, the drop would still be low but probably the same as all my other bikes.

Hey jdawg, I like this build, is this similar to the china-carbon track frames on alibaba.com? I wanted to buy one, but dunno if it was legit or not. Any comments at all, would be greatly appreciated. Oahu cyclist (leader 725).

Hey dude, I searched the website and found the TP-R810 which turns out to be exactly this frame. The seat tube on this bike (even on the one that I owned which was a 58cm top tube c-c) is extremely short. For me, even though I had the seat positioned way to high, if the seat were at its correct height, the seat post would still have been way past its minimum insertion line. On top of that the seat post clamp mechanism breaks the frame were the seat post is inserted. My clamp area was cracked but it still held the seat post in place so I'm not quite sure of the severity of this detail. Other than that the bike sprinted very fast and comfortably, was very light, looked very good, but was not the stiffest frame I've ever ridden. There's my two cents on this bike. I would definitely buy another one assuming that it came with the correct length seatpost.

Hahaha, wayyyyyy too short for how I had this bike setup! I'm 5' 10.75". 58cm top tube with a 110mm stem? I have no idea how I managed that! And on top of that, the seat was at least 3 - 5cm too high.

I now prefer a 54cm top tube c-c with a 130mm stem or a 55cm top tube c-c with a 120mm stem and I think that they both fit me perfectly.

And I deleted them all because I get trolled on pretty hard. Hahhaa.

jdawg4334

jdawg4334 says:

Any stem that is level with the ground is 17 degree. 72 - 75 degree is the typical range of head tube angles so that puts the stem at 89 - 92 degrees which is basically level with the ground.

Unclip

Unclip says:

I can help you with that. I would recommend getting Shimano 105 pedals (around $70-80). As for shoes, Shimano makes a great starter shoe that will be great for city riding as you described. It is called the R077 road shoe. It can run anywhere from $60-80 depending on where you shop. This is a great set up. If you want more high performance, you can go with Dura-Ace pedals and SIDI or BONT shoes. But that's if you have a large budget. :D

Posted about 12 years ago

jdawg4334

jdawg4334 says:

Sidi or Bont? You're so lame! What about Giro, Bontrager, Pearl Izumi, And even Shimano? Hahaha, they make good shoes too, not just Sidi and Bont.

Hahaha, dude, get whatever pedals you want, I wouldn't spend less than 200 dollars on shoes. Trust me, I've had low end shoes, they're not even worth trying on.

Posted about 12 years ago

Unclip

Unclip says:

Jon, the first example I gave was a Shimano shoe. I was helping him out, and then gave my personal favorite shoes, which are Bont and Sidi. (Bont being the best in my opinion). I never said those where the only two brands that make great shoes.

I don't know how to buy it but there it is. A similar frame with a front and rear derailleur brazing is sold on Ebay as well.

longkachia says:

any idea how much does it cost the previous owner on the frame? n what do u thk of this frame? light and stiff?

Posted over 12 years ago

jdawg4334

jdawg4334 says:

Not stiff at all, not when compared to an alloy frame. If you ride it for a while, you can't feel it anymore, but the first time you ride a steel frame, the differences in stiffness is completely noticeable.

And the previous owner paid like, 1500 for the frame, original fork, Easton track stem and bars (the EC90 track stuff), FSA carbon track cranks, a San Marco Aspide Superleggera, the Cane Creek wheel that I had (he traded it to me with the frame), a front Hed 3, and the highest level Look Keos. Idk what they're called.

So... he got an amazing deal!

But alone, the frame retails for about 600 - 700 bucks on Ebay. Unfortunately, they stopped making this frame a long time ago and now make a TT version of this frame and there are some slight differences between the two. Apparently, you can purchase this frame off of EAI's website.

http://www.euroasiaimports.com/productc...

So with that one, the only difference is the seatpost collar.

With this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Full-Carbon...

The seatpost collar is different as well, the dropouts and seattube have derailleur brazings, and the seatube wheel thing, like, how the seatube hugs the wheel, it doesn't do it as much as my frame. Near the top of the bend, it like, stops and goes off at a different angle.

Hard to explain, but aside from those differences, they'll all essentially the same frame.

Posted almost 13 years ago

jdawg4334

jdawg4334 says:

It's extremely stiff! The frame hardly flexes at all and that results in extreme pedaling and accelerating / riding efficiency.

Idk though, carbon, even though it's not, seems sketchy. I want something steel again or at the least aluminum. Will actually probably be selling this bike soon.

Well, if you wanna build an aero (almost airfoil) kind of a frame, you should check out Columbus Life megatubes. My other frame is built with this tube set but the tubes come in several different dear-drop shapes. Some are really slick and agressive looking (:!
Or you could go with Columbus Air but they don't make those anymore so it'd have to be a second hand frame!
For my next project, I've chosen Columbus Spirit for lugs but it's a traditional 1" round tube set. It's very light though..

Posted almost 13 years ago

jdawg4334

jdawg4334 says:

Dude, so I'm like... Do you go to some place and basically choose the tubing you want and they build you a super custom frame?

Posted almost 13 years ago

mtretyn

mtretyn says:

I can see you're from California. You must have some super custom frame builder around there! Cause that's exactly what I did. In Poland we have couple of framebuilders and some of them are really good! My Rychtarski Ultimate Track was custom built by a guy named Rychtarski. He's almost as old as track cycling itself. And it's just like you said. You choose tubing, lugs, track ends, geometry...
In US there is Koichi Yamaguchi, a former framebuilder of 3RENSHO. If I'm not mistaken, he lives in Rifle, Colorado! Here's a website: http://www.yamaguchibike.com/

Hahaha, well, on the very tip of my Flite saddle, it was all worn down and stuff, so I figured that that was where I sat down the most and when you felt where that worn part was, it was like, solid; rock hard. So, I figured that the carbon couldn't be much different. And for the most part, it isn't. Comfort wise, it's very comfy like the Flite was. But, the back end of the carbon saddle doesn't rise up as much so there isn't as much butt cheek support. Hahaha, it's fine though.

and yea, i feel like it looks too small, but in reality, its not. i think that they way they made this frame was similar to the way they make high end time trial frames: with a really short seat tube but a top tube proportionate to the size of the frame. so, even the its a short seat tube, i just raise my seat up and since the top tube is just as long as it should be, my reach is just as long as it should be too.

so yea, thats my theory on the sizing of this frame and it makes sense because my pursuit KILLED my back and this one is totally fine.

and plus, i enjoy the low positioning; headwinds are a breeze now.

(AHAHAHA!! A BREEZE! GET IT?! GET ITTT?!!?! :D)

Yeah I feel you on the geo its for being low like tt. Disc wheel not very practical for everyday riding or whipping skids. I had one and only ridden it on the track nd doing laps around a bike loop.

jdawg4334 says:

thanks a bunch man. i think so too. :]

they dont even make this version of the frame anymore, that ebay china company makes a stupid tt version of it with front derailleur mounts but no rear derailleur mounts... they should have just left it this way.

but yea, ive had my eye on this frame way back in the day when it was a track frame, im so happy i have it now.
