Picked up this repainted Colnago Saronni pista frameset. I dont think there are many around of these. Or are there ? The Colnago-Saronni connection goes back to late 1979, when Colnago brokered a deal a deal to provide bicycles for Saronni's 1980 GIS team. Saronni had become a household name in Italy during 1979, winning the general classification and points titles in the Giro d'Italia for the SCIC team on a Bottecchia. Colnago saw a marketing opportunity and persuaded SCIC team manager Carlo Chiappano to set up a re-organized team around Saronni, with GIS and Colnago support. In 1982 the team would switch major sponsorship to Del Tongo, which would last through 1988. Colnago started marketing bicycles under the Saronni brand in 1980 (possibly late 1979) in order to capitalize on the Giro victory. . Saronni was one of the two major Italian stars of the 1980s, with the tifosi being divided between Moser and Saronni. Saronni would add a World Championship in 1982 and another general classification Giro title in 1983. While an good overall rider, Saronni's speciality was sprinting. He took 4 Giro points titles and added several minor tour titles and classics victories for good measure. . As previously noted, the GIS and Del Tongo era team bicycles were a dark red with white panels that became known as Saronni red. This colour scheme pre-dates Saronni's association with Colnago, having been used on the 1979 Inoxpran team's Colnagos. Inoxpran's brand colours were red and white and the Battaglins and Pinarellos previously used by the team had also been red. However, the colour would forever be associated with Saronni, Colnago's most successful rider of the 1980s. . 54cm center center 55,5cm center top 55cm top tube
